Data Good Questions for Discussion
In class activity/Teacher’s Notes: Introduce the idea of data using the following video. Ensure you let students know that they will be watching a video on data, and the amazing ways we can take large amounts of information and make sense of it. http://www.ted.com/talks/david_mccandless_the_beauty_of_data_visualization Sports Fantasy about Shoe size - Let the class pick a favorite sport. Imagine that a Professional Sports League has started an outreach program to public schools and has offered to buy the whole class new shoes (or skates). But they say they will only buy 3 sizes of shoe. What sizes do we ask for? Notes for the Teacher:

Who cares about statistics & data? Identifying communities of practice. Good Questions:
In class activity/Teacher’s Notes: Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 by area of interest. Give them 20 minutes to research and identify a specific community of practice that uses data. After the allotted time, have each group lead a short discussion describing the community, how they communicate, the data they use and how they access that data. Teacher Notes:
